It's an hour-long workout, in which you push yourself to the maximum. I just told somebody that, a couple weeks ago, a writer that Im working withmy own voice is sometimes difficult to hear. When I was with Zappa, I wanted to learn to play vibes, and I wanted to be able to read faster, so I took some les- sons from Mitchell Peters, who is with the L.A. Philharmonic. And so we kept waiting around to see if he was gonna go take care of it. He sent me the ticket the day before I left. At first, I was scared about really doing it, because I thought, "What would it be like to be muscle-bound and go on stage? And Id sleep, and Id wake up, go do the gig, and the same thing would happen all over again. When that audience wanted an encore, and they would not let you leave, it was just so gratifying. We did get a little bit trendy in spots, we all occasionally got a bit funny with our dressing, but we did not follow the New Wave thing, or the punk thing. We were destroyed by thathe was a wonderful singer, a wonderful bass player, and a great guy, and he was part of a real interesting chemistry that Columbia wanted to sign. After being on the road, I'd spend a couple of months studying with him once or twice a week. Oh he is one of my favorite drummers on the planet. You can be working 10, 12, 14 hours every day. This has to do with Kiss having a certain sound and style. No rehearsal-just get on the stage and play. I'll just leave it awhile and see what else develops, and then I'll get something. He will just come in with an idea of what he wants to hear, and we'll all work it out. You were able to function, so you never really addressed any of that stuff. So it felt freeing at some level to be a free agent, in 98, cause the industry was really changing, and the Internet was becoming a big thing, and I thought, Gee, the futures kinda wide open. And then [laughs] then I just got this unbelievable freaky drive, which shows the neurosis of the singer-songwriter. And sell some records. I started out with tin cans actually, to see if I could develop anything, but l got bored trying to get a sound out of it so finally got a drum and started practicing on that. He was in another band, at that point, and apparently they were getting ready to get signed, and his bass player was in an awful car crash and died. Almost exactly like the panic I felt before I got into the band, Journey. Waka/ Jawaka was also a jazz album. I would have neverI would have never thought that was gonna happen. Alexis Komer, the blues singer, invited me down to a club where he was playing. I thought in my own mind that before you could even go out there and play, you had to be as good as the people you were listening to on records. I practically learned to play them on stage. asked me if I'd like to join his band, with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. But it's always interesting because he is a very good musician. But in January, Jon told me on the phone, I just wanna know. And I said, Dont call it Journey. And those lyrics are a big part of it. I went from playing seven days a week with Mayall to one day a month with Beck. On stage, Craig is the person I react to the most because solo-wise, he's the one who is always doing something new. Im not. So at the end of a night, you feel great. Call it the J-Boys. And I said, I am _not _gonna tour and sit on a stool. I've been collecting material for it. It was a real great experience. He's great at all of the percussion things. **But do you think your drinking affected your relationships with the other guys in the band? I dont know. She would be on one side of the stage with the orchestra, and I would be on the other, so there was a gap between us. And at that point were all thinking, Oh, wow. [laughs] Please.
